Reduction of accidents related to agricultural vehicles and machinery in agriculture through new technologies

Through this SafeHabitus workshop, our aim is to facilitate discussion and share perspectives among European actors and policymakers directly involved in improving working conditions in agriculture through the use of new technologies, artificial intelligence, and digitalization.

Agricultural vehicles and machinery are a leading cause of fatal workplace accidents in agriculture, accounting for the largest proportion of such accidents in most EU countries. Therefore, this policy seminar will analyze the potential impact of new technologies on accident reduction, explore practices, tools, and measures that could be implemented to reduce these accidents, and identify policy, research, and funding measures that should be applied to improve occupational safety and health (OSH) in agriculture.

We will draw on selected European and international examples and offer stakeholders in the agricultural and occupational health and safety sectors the opportunity to exchange knowledge and perspectives on how working conditions in agriculture can be improved for all farmers and agricultural workers.

The seminar will consist of two parts: first, an overview of existing examples of technology integration practices and how these examples have improved working conditions in the agricultural sector; and second, a policy roundtable to discuss what policy changes would be needed to improve and scale up these systems to other farms, agricultural businesses, sectors, and geographical regions.
